Today's Word

Today's word is a song title

Waga yoki Tomo yo
My good friend (note this is old Japanese)

Today's Word

American (super hero) comics

The Japanese name for comics 漫画 manga (漫 funny + picture 画) has become an international word, but we still use a foreign word to refer to foreign things.

アメコミ amekomi is short for American Comic アメリカンコミックス(amerikankomikkusu)

Japan is sometimes very conscious of the split between occidental and oriental.

We say 邦画 houga for Japanese and east Asian films, and 洋語 youga for western/European films.

Although many Japanese children grow up with a view of the world that it is made of two countries 日本 Japan and 外国 foreign land(s), we are actually very sensitive about where things come from.

Let's Learn to Pronounce Japanese Sounds

Japanese is very easy to pronounce, much easier than say English. It is based on a very limited collection of immutable syllables which we call 五十音 gozyuuon The Fifty Sounds.
Although there are actually less than fifty base sounds in Japanese, they are arranged into a grid of 5 pure vowels and 10 consonants some of which can be slightly augmented.

The five vowels of Japanese are あいうえお a i u e o, and that is their "alphabetic" order.
あ a sounds likes the a in father
い i sounds like the ee in feet
う u sounds like the oo in zoo
え e sounds like the e in bet
お o sounds like the o in solo

the vowel sounds stay the same no matter which consonant you pronounce them after

All Japanese sounds are pronounced one syllable, one beat, ending in a vowel
(bonus, this is why Japanese poetry is syllable based 5,7,5 and not stressed or "rhyming")

There is one exception that comes at the end of our syllabary ん nn is pronounced like a mix between English m and n, and never begins a word.

There are some other consonants that might be confusing to foreigners. かきくけこ ka ki ku ke ko is very simple, but
さしすせそ sa si su se so
し si is pronounced like the English word "she" with an sh sound
たちつてと ta ti tu te to
ち ti is pronounced similar to an English "ch" sound rather than "t" = chi
つ tu is pronounced "tsu"

つ is an important letter because if you write it small っ it becomes a symbol meaning "guttural stop." In roman letters this is represented by repeating the consonant it precedes.
Let's practice!
きて kite (ki te = kee tay) means come (please)
きって kitte (ki guttural stop te) means a stamp, or it could mean "please cut"
きいて kiite (ki i te) means listen (please), be sure to pronounce every syllable for one beat

はひふへお ha hi hu he ho
ふ hu sounds similar to an English F, but you don't bite the bottom lip "fu"

There are two other tricks to pronouncing Japanese
゛ dakuten and ゜ handakuten
AND
ゃ ゅ ょ a few more little letters, ya yu and yo

゛ dakuten are too little marks you can put on a letter that mean "pronounce this sound deep in the throat"
it turns
か ka into が ga
さ sa into ざ za
た ta into だ da
は ha into ば ba

Note: the Japanese sound じ zi like the Japanese sound し si sound different to English ears
we already learnt that "si" sounds like "shi"
but "zi" sounds like "ji"

゜handakuten (half deep throat sound mark) only goes on ハ行 hagyou the H row

And the last thing you have to know is!

You can write や ya ゆ yu よ yo small after a consonant in the い段 i dan I row, and make a new sound
So き ki becomes きゃ kya し si (shi) becomes しゃ sya (sha) and so forth
you can use it if the letter has dakuten or handakuten as well ぴょん pyon

It is important to know that Kya is one syllable, not Ki A.

Pepsi Caribbean Gold

Famous for annually releasing eccentric new flavours like cucumber, baobab, and mont blanc, the new product we've all been waiting for from Pepsi and this year's topical flavour is "Pepsi: Caribbean Gold". A shining gold soda that will be flavoured with white sapote.

White Sapote is harvested when it is still young and relatively hard and then allowed to ripen after picking. It is soft and easy to eat.
The very strong sweetness of the fruit makes it easy to forget that it's a member of the citrus family and the flavour is something like a mix between a banana and a pear.

Chinese Girl stirs up conversation

A Chinese Beauty with huge eyes like a cartoon caricature draws attention

Previously we had the "just like a shop window manequin" Chinese beauty, but the topic du jour is even more astounding.

Here name is Koko. She has the long legs and arms matched with a slender body type that conjures images of a girls' comics heroine . But what really draws attention is her eyes!

On first seeing her bulbous peepers one is at first shocked and draws comparisons to characters in girls'  comics. It is uncertain whether her eyes were always this enormous, but the effect of make-up does make them look larger still.

On Chinese message boards she received fevered responses of horror, "Seriously scary!" "This is too frightening!" "Is she a ghost!?" and "I felt the fear of death." Others postulated that the images had been photoshopped.

Man falls to death avoiding Football

An 87 year old man fell from his bicycle avoiding a flying football and received many broken bones → developed dementia → and the next year died of pulmonary aspiration ... Family seeks 15000000 JPY in reparation from the the parents of the boy who kicked the ball.

In an Oosaka court a case has been opened to determine if a 19 year old boy is responsible for negligent behaviour when he was a 5th year primary school student and kicked a football out of the pitch which caused a man passing by on his bicycle to fall and at the age of 87 lose his life.

According to the boy's defense, in February 2004 he was doing free kick practice at the school pitch when a kick aimed at the goal flew over the school gate and rolled onto the street. A man on a bicycle attempting to avoid the ball fell and broke his leg. After that incident he developed symptoms of dementia and in July of the next year accidentally intook some foodstuffs into his trachea and died of pulmonary asphyxiation.

The boy's defense claims "He kicked the ball towards the goal like normal, there's nothing in illegal in that," but on the 27th the decision came that, "Depending on the manner in which the ball was kicked, it would be possible to foretell its traveling into the street. Because the boy was a minor at the time he has no legal responsibility, however his parents are responsible to pay restitution."

Akiko Wada voices complaints re: Lady Gaga's charity

Akiko Wada, re: Lady Gaga's charity donation "It's not very much for how much she's earning"

This is the news that Akiko Wada (61) said on her TBS programme "Leave it to Akko" on the 26th re: Lady Gaga's recent earthquake relief donation that the amount wasn't particularly impressive.

Lady Gaga donated approximated 240000000 JPY including some of her own pocket money for the restoration of areas effected by the great eastern Japanese earthquake. Mrs. Wada said "For Gaga who makes 720
0000000 JPY per annum, I don't think it's very much."

http://www.sponichi.co.jp/entertainment/news/2011/06/27/kiji/K20110627001096980.html

Instead of the Japanese response today, let's learn a little bit about Mrs. Akiko Oda.

Akiko Wada was born Bokja Kim in Japan. She is what is called a 在日韓国人 or Japanese Resident Korean. They are Korean families left in Japan after the second great war, although now they are many generations living in Japan they don't have Japanese citizenship or voting rights.
Many live in poverty and the perceived crime rate is very high. In Japan it is common manners to ignore this problem, and the average Japanese attitude is "Why don't they just naturalise if they want to be citizens?" (There are many issues related to national identity which I won't address here)
Mrs. Wada became a naturalised Japanese Citizen when she married the CEO of her Production Company. That is how she got the name Akiko Wada. Previously she sang under the pseudonym Fukuko Kaneumi. Since her first marriage she has been divorced and remarried several times.

Akko-san as she's known is very famous for being highly opionated. Her past is filled with incidents, some violent, but she always assumes the moral high ground.

She's the sort of persistent celebrity that everybody loves to hate and loves to be hated.

One respondent "The girls aren't cute!! My daughters were complaining that the female characters were annoying and unattractive when they quit Final Fantasy. Make some female characters that are cute from not just the male but also the female perspective! Don't change the cuteness of the Dragon Quest characters though! That's the sort of thing we're looking for.
Also, you made a film once didn't you? Let's leave that to the professionals from now on.

After tea produced in the Kiyomizu district of Sizuoka city was determined to contain excessive levels of radioactive caesium, the mayor Mr. Nobuhiro Tanabe announced on the 23rd that he would begin the "We are drinking tea from Shizuoka City" project. Mayor Tanabe has said, "By taking the initiative to drink locally produced tea ourselves, we can allay negative rumours."

The project has the government and local businesses working together to purchase and promote the imbibing of locally produced tea. By revealing the names of participants in the project on the internet, the hope is that fans of Shizuoka Tea will increase in number.

Worried about contaminated school lunches, a mother sends her child to school with a box lunch ... the only child to bring their own lunch to class

(東京都):2011/06/19(日) 22:26:22.91 ID:6YFzo0QA0 ?PLT
Fighting an invisible enemy, a mother protects her child! Mrs. Ayumi, a resident of Chiba Prefecture, hasn't been feeding her first year primary school child the school lunch since she started school: for fear of radiation contamination. She tells the school the reason her daughter can't eat the school lunch is because of allergies, but in reality she is worried about contaminated foodstuffs. For her eldest daughter who is the only one in class to bring a box lunch, the mother meticulously prepares the same lunch that is on the school menu.
"I would hate for her to be bullied because of my fault."

On the 21st of May, her daughter came in from the rain with a rash on her forehead. "I worried that it might be because of radiation." On the 23rd, radioactive material was discovered in the Tokyo public water supply. Panicked, the mother and daughter got on the train and evacuated to a weekly flat in Kyoto, but because of her daughter's entrance ceremony they would have to return to Tokyo.

Since then they've stopped eating out completely, and get their vegetables from Kansai and eggs from Kyuusyuu. Because of the increased expenses they limit their water intake to bottled water: 4litres per day, to do the washing up they use an office water cooler.

Let's see the Japanese response to this mother's uneducated reactionary approach to disaster.

Furthermore the governor announced that he would "secure the information, and expediently monitor the export routes."

This is the news that the General Producer of Morning Star Television, Tomohisa Fujii, tweeted yesterday that their television viewership entering prime time finally reached above 1 percent of the audience.

What is your response? Recently it's been a phenomenon in Japan to say this generation has moved away from the things the last generation enjoyed.
This generation of Japanese people doesn't eat fish anymore! They don't watch telly! Fruit sales are down.

I think most of it is rubbish and young Japanese people don't do the things older Japanese people do because the economy doesn't allow it, or because new technology has replaced the old ways.
Some of it I think they are making up. Like "this generation prefers showering to bathing".

But the television stats hold true. I think it's because they don't have the budget to produce a lot of programmes.

55 year old Tosihiko Mizuno, unemployed, was arrested in Tokyo by the Police Force for Ensuring the Safety of Women and Children, or Sakura Police as they are commonly called, on suspicion of engaging in lewd activities. He is charged with calling out to little girls on the street and on the pretense of doing a research project involving saliva, video taping the girls as they spit into a film case.

According to the police, the suspect Mizuno is recorded as having confessed, "I wanted to make the girls my own, but I couldn't take them home with me, so I took their saliva as a human souvenir. I must've called out to 4000 little girls in the last 17 years.

Well, it's pretty perverted, but he's not committing any sexual crimes, and he's getting the permission of those spitting ... I think we have to say this guy is a real gentleman.

There's no real reason for this to be Gundam, is there?
Kids these days have enough entertainment anyway, they won't even be attracted to Gundam.

This is what's going to happen to Gundam Age

The DVDs won't sell
People will complain a lot at first, but its nerdy fanbase will still increase

Children won't watch it
The toys will sell the same as every year
